Thank you to all of our members who attended our 2013 Member’s Social in the Aishling Hotel in Dublin on Sunday April 14, 2013.

Fighting Blindness Head of Fundraising Tony Ward opened the event by welcoming everyone and introducing the business of the day. He also spoke about the origins of the organisation and the relevance of the members social.

Our Research Manager Dr. Maria Meehan then gave a research update and spoke about Target 3000.

Following this our CEO Avril Daly spoke about the significance of the Anne Byrne Memorial Award and introduced this years award winner, Eric Beggs from Dundalk, Co. Louth. Eric is a long time supporter of Fighting Blindness and has organised many events over the years to raise funds for the organisation. There is no one quite like Eric to rally the troops and get them going and he has done tremendous work for us with events such as church gate collections and Easter egg raffles.

Thank you to everyone who attended the event, it was lovely to meet you all and we look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Members’ Social 2012

Thanks to all who made the trip on a rainy Dublin afternoon to attend 2012’s Member’s Social!

Around 80 attended the social gathering at the Clarence Hotel on Sunday April 22nd. We were delighted to have so many come and celebrate the fantastic support our Members provide to Fighting Blindness. The afternoon also gave everyone a great opportunity to meet and discuss the organisation’s latest developments.

Our CEO Avril Daly updated members on current research, projects and happenings of Fighting Blindness, also thanking members for the support they bring. Martina Madden, Project Coordinator of T3000 spoke about a new initiative of Fighting Blindness, called Target 3000 which aims to further the development of our research into genetically inherited conditions causing blindness. For more information on T3000 contact the office on +353 1 709 3050 or email

During the Member’s Social, Fighting Blindness had the opportunity to present this year’s Anne Byrne Memorial Award to Dr Paul Kenna for his outstanding commitment and service to Fighting Blindness for over 20 years. Mary Lavelle, Head of Counselling at the Insight Counselling Centre presented the award. Paul has dedicated his life’s work to research into finding treatments and cures for blindness and we are truly grateful to him for his work, integrity and determination to do all in his power to fight blindness.

The first ever Anne Byrne award was presented to Dolores Leavey in 2010 and Frank Kelly in 2011. Both were present to celebrate the day and honour Dr Paul Kenna as the 2012 recipient. We were delighted to meet Claire Keogh, sister of Anne, who was present also.

It was a lovely day and thank you to all for coming to celebrate Fighting Blindness’s work and each other.
