Fighting Blindness is involved with rare, genetic, age-related and degenerative conditions that affect an estimated 246,773 in Ireland and 285 million people worldwide. In this section you will find information about conditions causing sight loss and about any ongoing research in specific disease areas. Being diagnosed with a condition causing sight loss can be extremely difficult. Our Insight Counselling Service provides support for people and families who are living with sight loss. If you have an inherited retinal condition such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP), Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), Usher syndrome. Stargardt disease, Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), choroideremia or retinoschisis among others, you may want to sign up for our Target 5000 research project. Target 5000 aims to identify the exact genetic profile of the estimated 5,000 people in Ireland affected by a retinal degenerative condition. You can find out more about Target 5000 here.
