Target 5000: Paving the Way to a Cure

One of the biggest challenges for people with inherited retinal conditions is the lack of a precise diagnosis…

You Can Help Change That

Approximately 5000 people in Ireland have an inherited genetic retinal condition. Sadly many people are misdiagnosed – or do not have any diagnosis – as they need complicated DNA testing to uncover exactly which gene has caused their condition.

Target 5,000 is a hugely ambitious research project funded by the generosity of Fighting Blindness supporters. Our aim is to reach every one of these 5000 people and help provide a genetic diagnosis.

When the gene responsible for an individual’s condition can be identified it can mean so much. A more accurate diagnosis and, for many we hope, access to clinical trials which may lead to treatments and cures in the future.

Done by taking blood tests and mapping each individual’s genome (and their family’s in many cases), the project it is now well underway thanks to your incredible support. Since the project started there have been about 1000 people registered. Our aim is to reach all 5000 people affected in Ireland by 2018. We believe we can get there – but we can’t do it without your support.
