Fighting Blindness Marks World sight Day With Announcement of International Scientific Conference In Dublin

What: World Sight Day

When: Thursday, October 9, 2014

Thursday, October 9, marks the 39th annual World Sight Day, held every October to raise awareness about blindness and visual impairment. Fighting Blindness is celebrating World Sight Day 2014 by announcing details of their upcoming Retina Scientific Conference. Retina 2014, which takes place in Croke Park on Friday, November 7, brings together leading international and Irish figures in the global effort to find treatments and cures for conditions causing sight loss. The conference, which includes an address from Mr Leo Varadkar TD, Minister for Health, features scientists from Ireland, the UK, Europe and the United States.

This is the 16th year of the conference and Fighting Blindness Research Manager, Dr Maria Meehan, explains it’s significance; “Our Retina Conference has now become a prominent event in the international vision research calendar and is growing every year. It is a very exciting time for retinal research with many potential therapies now moving from the development to clinical trial phase. This event provides an opportunity for researchers and clinicians to learn from one another by sharing knowledge and forming links and collaborations to further expedite these efforts.”

There are 224,000 people living with sight loss in Ireland, many of whom are affected by degenerative retinal conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy, as well as rare inherited conditions. Fighting Blindness is an Irish patient-led organisation working towards the development of treatments and eventual cures for these conditions. The charity funds research in Ireland and offers counselling and support to people affected by sight loss while acting as advocates in issues of health policy.

The Retina 2014 Scientific Conference is open to all scientists, researchers, clinicians, students and industry. Full details on the event can be found at
